The Column of Arkadius, though no longer standing, holds a significant place in the historical narrative of Istanbul. This monumental structure was erected in the early 5th century during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius, lending its name to the column. It once stood proudly in what is now the Cerrahpaşa area of Istanbul, marking the center of the Forum of Arcadius, a grand public square.
The column itself was a towering structure, intricately carved with spiraling reliefs that depicted the victories and achievements of Emperor Arcadius. These reliefs were not merely decorative; they were visual stories meant to celebrate the emperor’s triumphs and solidify his legacy in the hearts of the people. Rising over 50 meters (164 feet) into the sky, it was crowned with a statue of the emperor in a commanding pose.
Over centuries, the column endured natural disasters and human interventions. Its grand statue and upper sections were lost to history, and the remnants of the column gradually deteriorated. By the Ottoman era, what remained of this once-majestic monument had been removed for safety reasons, leaving behind only its base, which was eventually buried beneath the streets of modern Istanbul.
Today, traces of the Column of Arkadius are hard to find, but its legacy lives on in the stories of Byzantium and the enduring fascination with the city’s layered history. Arkadius Sütunu, günümüzde ayakta olmasa da İstanbul’un tarihi anlatısında önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu anıtsal yapı, 5. yüzyılın başlarında Bizans İmparatoru Arkadius döneminde inşa edilmiş ve sütun, imparatorun adını almıştır. Bir zamanlar İstanbul’un Cerrahpaşa semtinde, Arkadius Forumu’nun merkezinde yükselen bu sütun, şehrin görkemli geçmişinin simgelerindendi.
Sütun, spiral şeklinde oyulmuş kabartmalarla süslenmişti ve bu kabartmalar, İmparator Arkadius’un zaferlerini ve başarılarını tasvir ediyordu. Bu görkemli süslemeler, yalnızca dekoratif değil, aynı zamanda imparatorun zaferlerini halkın hafızasına kazımak için bir araçtı. Yaklaşık 50 metre (164 feet) yüksekliğe ulaşan sütunun tepesinde, imparatorun görkemli bir heykeli bulunuyordu.
Yüzyıllar boyunca sütun, doğal felaketler ve insan müdahaleleriyle tahribata uğradı. Üst bölümleri ve heykeli zamanla kayboldu, kalan kısımlar ise yavaş yavaş yıkıldı. Osmanlı dönemine gelindiğinde sütunun kalan parçaları güvenlik gerekçesiyle tamamen kaldırıldı ve günümüzde sütunun tabanı, modern İstanbul sokaklarının altında gömülü durumda.
Bugün Arkadius Sütunu’nun izleri neredeyse görünmez olsa da, Bizans’ın zengin tarihi ve İstanbul’un katmanlı geçmişi içerisinde anlamını korumaktadır. Cerrahpaşa sokaklarında dolaşırken, bu anıtsal yapının hikâyesi, geçmişten bugüne bir köprü kurar ve modern şehir manzarasına tarihî bir dokunuş katar.
