The theater was built by the architect Zenon of Aspendos in the 2nd century AD, during the time of #Marcus Aurelius.
According to the story, the king will marry his beautiful daughter to the person who does the most useful work for the #city.

Hikâyeye göre kral, dünyalar güzeli kızını, kent için en faydalı işi yapan kişiyle evlendireceğini söylemiş. Elemeleri geçenler, su kemerlerinin ve tiyatronun mimarları olmuş. Kral, kentin en önemli ihtiyacını karşılayan su kemerlerinin mimarına eğilimliymiş. Kızın gönlü tiyatronun mimarından yanaymış.
Bir gün baba-kız tiyatronun en üstteki galeriyi gezerlerken, tiyatronun mimarı, kral ve kızının tiyatroda olduklarından habersiz,“Kralın kızı benim olmalı” şeklinde mırıldanıyormuş.
Fısıltı halindeki bu sesin en aşağıdan yukarıya ulaştığını fark edince kral, bundan çok etkilenmiş ve mimarın ne kadar başarılı bir akustik gerçekleştirdiğini anmış. Bu akustiği verebilen mimar her şeyi başarabilir diye düşünmüş ve kızını tiyatronun mimarıyla evlendirmiş.
