Its foundation was laid in 1597 by Safiye Sultan, the wife of Sultan Murad III, yet it took nearly seven decades to see its completion. This prolonged timeline speaks volumes about the persistence of the Ottoman imperial family and the dedication of Turhan Hatice Sultan, the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, who ensured the mosque’s completion in 1665.

The initial plans were crafted by the architect Davut Ağa, but his untimely death and political upheavals left the construction in limbo. Dalgıç Ahmed Ağa took over the task, but the project stalled after Safiye Sultan’s passing. It was not until Turhan Hatice Sultan’s vision and generosity that the mosque was finally completed under the supervision of the chief architect Mustafa Ağa during Sultan Mehmed IV’s reign.

Murad’ın eşi Safiye Sultan tarafından temeli atılan bu muazzam yapı, tam anlamıyla yetmiş yıl sonra tamamlanmıştır. Bu uzun süreç, Osmanlı ailesinin azmini ve Sultan IV.
