Did you know, the art of painting in the mosaics and frescoes of the Chora Church has been interpreted as an early sign of the Renaissance movement? The Renaissance movement spread from Italy to all over Europe from the 15th century onwards. The mosaics and frescoes of the Chora Church are from the previous century, that is the 14th century. Mosaics depicting the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary are of worldwide importance and beauty. Background elements and architectural details were emphasized to give a sense of depth. The scenes with proportional figures are realistic as if they were taken from daily life. The expression on the face of Jesus is very humane. A new decision has recently been taken to reopen the Kariye Museum for worship. We wish that the mosaics and frescoes in this marvelous building are well preserved and somehow kept open to visitors.
