The Aetios Cistern, located in the Karagümrük neighborhood of Istanbul’s Fatih district, holds a significant place in the city’s Byzantine history. Once one of the largest Byzantine cisterns in Constantinople, this historical structure now serves a completely different function as a football stadium, known since 1928 as Karagümrük Stadium or Vefa Stadium.

Constructed in the 5th century during a period of rapid urban expansion and increasing population in Constantinople, the Cistern of Aetios was built to address the city’s growing water supply needs. Unlike Rome, Constantinople did not have a readily accessible local water source, which became a critical issue as the city expanded. The construction of the cistern was part of a broader effort to enhance the city’s infrastructure, which included the extension of the Aqueduct of Valens and the development of other public utilities like baths and additional cisterns.

The Aetios Cistern was strategically placed near the Edirne Gate (historically known as the Gate of Charisius), about 300 meters to the southeast, and situated on a ridge between the Fifth and Sixth Hills of the city. It was part of an elaborate network designed to store and distribute water brought from distant sources in Thrace, which was essential for sustaining the city’s population and its activities.

Despite its initial utility, the cistern fell into disuse following the Siege of Constantinople in 626 when the Aqueduct of Valens was cut. Over the centuries, the structure was repurposed, and by the Ottoman era, it had been transformed into a sunken garden known as Karagümrük Çukurbostanı, reflecting its integration into the community’s daily life in a new form.

Today, the former Cistern of Aetios as Karagümrük Stadium reflects a fascinating layering of historical functions, from a critical water reservoir of the Byzantine capital to a modern-day sports venue, encapsulating the continuous evolution of Istanbul’s urban landscape.

Aetios Sarnıcı, İstanbul’un Fatih ilçesinin Karagümrük semtinde yer alan, şehrin Bizans tarihinde önemli bir yere sahip olan tarihi bir yapıdır. Bir zamanlar Konstantinopolis’teki en büyük Bizans sarnıçlarından biri olan bu yapı, günümüzde futbol stadyumu olarak hizmet vermektedir ve 1928’den beri Karagümrük Stadyumu veya Vefa Stadyumu olarak bilinir.

5. yüzyılda, şehrin hızla genişlemesi ve nüfusunun artması sırasında inşa edilen Aetios Sarnıcı, şehrin artan su ihtiyacını karşılamak amacıyla yapılmıştı. Roma’nın aksine, Konstantinopolis kolayca ulaşılabilir bir yerel su kaynağına sahip değildi, bu durum şehir genişledikçe ciddi bir sorun haline gelmişti. Yüzyıllar boyunca yapı, yeni bir amaçla yeniden kullanılmış ve Osmanlı döneminde Karagümrük Çukurbostanı olarak bilinen bir çukur bahçeye dönüştürülmüştür, böylece yeni bir formda topluluğun günlük yaşamına entegre olmuştur.

Bugün eski Aetios Sarnıcı’nın Karagümrük Stadyumu olarak kullanılması, Bizans başkentinin kritik bir su rezervuarından modern bir spor mekanına kadar tarihi işlevlerin ilginç bir katmanlaşmasını yansıtmaktadır ve İstanbul’un kentsel peyzajının sürekli evrimini özetlemektedir.
