The Arch of Theodosius, once a grand triple triumphal arch, stood prominently in the Forum of Theodosius in Constantinople. As the only known monumental arch in the city, it marked a significant architectural and cultural symbol in Late Antiquity, embodying the city’s ambition to rival the grandeur of Rome. Completed by 393 AD to coincide with the inauguration of the forum, the arch was strategically designed to celebrate the power and achievements of the Theodosian dynasty.

Adorned with statues, the Arch of Theodosius featured depictions of Theodosius himself flanked by his sons, Arcadius and Honorius, each positioned on the sides of the central arch. This placement not only highlighted the imperial lineage but also served as a visual representation of the continuity and strength of Theodosius’s rule. The arch’s architectural grandeur was further emphasized by its elaborate decorations and the use of four ornately carved columns that supported the structure, each standing on a marble base.

Unfortunately, like many ancient structures, the Arch of Theodosius did not survive the test of time and was likely destroyed by an earthquake. The remnants of its former glory were brought to light in 1958 when two marble bases and numerous pieces of architectural sculpture were discovered in the Beyazıt area of Istanbul. These findings have helped historians and archaeologists piece together the arch’s original magnificence and its location along the Mese, straddling the central avenue on either side of the Forum of Theodosius I.

The columns of the arch bear a design similarity to those found in the Basilica Cistern, suggesting a stylistic coherence prevalent in the architectural endeavors of the period. Today, while the Arch of Theodosius no longer stands, its fragments offer a tangible link to the past, echoing the artistic and architectural prowess that once defined Constantinople.

Theodosius Kemeri, bir zamanlar Konstantinopolis’teki Theodosius Forumu’nda yer alan görkemli üçlü bir zafer takıydı. Şehirde bilinen tek anıtsal kemer olan bu yapı, Geç Antik Çağ’da şehrin Roma’nın ihtişamıyla rekabet etme amacını simgeleyen önemli bir mimari ve kültürel semboldü. 393 yılında, forumun açılışıyla aynı zamanda tamamlanan kemer, Theodosian hanedanının gücünü ve başarılarını kutlamak için stratejik olarak tasarlanmıştı.

Heykellerle süslenmiş Theodosius Kemeri, Theodosius’un kendisini, yanlarında oğulları Arcadius ve Honorius’un bulunduğu merkezi kemerde tasvir ediyordu. Bu yerleşim, sadece imparatorluk soyunu değil, aynı zamanda Theodosius’un yönetiminin sürekliliğini ve gücünü de görsel olarak temsil ediyordu. Kemerin mimari görkemi, dört süslü sütun tarafından desteklenen yapı ve her biri mermer bir tabana oturan sütunlarla daha da vurgulandı.

Ne yazık ki, pek çok antik yapı gibi Theodosius Kemeri de zamanın sınavından geçemedi ve muhtemelen bir depremle yıkıldı. Eski ihtişamının kalıntıları 1958 yılında İstanbul’un Beyazıt bölgesinde iki mermer taban ve çok sayıda mimari heykel parçası keşfedildiğinde gün yüzüne çıktı. Bu bulgular, tarihçilere ve arkeologlara kemerin orijinal görkemini ve Mese’nin her iki tarafında Theodosius I Forumu’nu saran ana cadde boyunca yerini yeniden bir araya getirmelerine yardımcı oldu.

Kemerin sütunları, Yerebatan Sarnıcı’nda bulunanlarla benzer bir tasarıma sahip olup, dönemin mimari çabalarında yaygın olan stilistik bir bütünlüğü önermektedir. Günümüzde Theodosius Kemeri ayakta olmasa da, onun parçaları geçmişe somut bir bağ sunar ve bir zamanlar Konstantinopolis’i tanımlayan sanatsal ve mimari ustalığı yankılar.
