The Martyrion of Karpos and Papylos, located in Samatya (formerly Psamathia), Istanbul, is a fascinating historical site buried beneath the modern Church of St. Menas. Situated along the ancient Mese, the main thoroughfare of Constantinople leading to the Golden Gate, the site lies close to the sea walls and is steeped in both Christian tradition and Byzantine history.

According to legend, St. Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, commissioned the construction of this martyrion in honor of the saints Karpos and Papylos, who were martyred for their Christian faith. While the exact date of construction remains uncertain, it is traditionally dated to the 4th or 5th century, during the early Christian period.

The martyrion served as a sacred space commemorating these saints and later became the foundation for other religious structures. A domed church dedicated to St. Polykarpos was built over the site in later centuries but was destroyed in a fire in 1782. The current Church of St. Menas was constructed over the remains in 1833, preserving the martyrion beneath it.

The substructure of the martyrion is relatively well-preserved, offering a rare glimpse into early Byzantine architectural practices. It includes an apse and a domed vault constructed with brick, reflecting the engineering skills of the era. The structure is partially enclosed by a barrel-vaulted passage, adding to its architectural intrigue. Despite centuries of use and change, the martyrion remains a tangible connection to the religious and cultural traditions of Constantinople.

Today, the substructure has found an unexpected modern use as a restaurant named Helena Çak Stones, which blends its ancient roots with contemporary life. Another entrance to the site is located near an adjacent car wash, making it an unusual yet intriguing historical destination.

Visitors to the martyrion can appreciate its layered history, from its origins as a sacred space commissioned by a Christian empress to its role as part of modern-day Istanbul. Its proximity to other significant sites, such as the Monastery of Peribleptos and the Golden Gate, makes it a worthwhile addition to any exploration of the city’s Byzantine heritage.

Karpos ve Papylos Martyrionu, İstanbul’un Samatya (eski adıyla Psamathia) semtinde, günümüz Hagios Menas Kilisesi’nin altında yer alan, büyüleyici bir tarihî yapıdır. Efsaneye göre, Büyük Konstantin’in annesi olan Azize Helena, Hristiyan inancına bağlılıkları nedeniyle şehit edilen Karpos ve Papylos adına bu martyrionun inşa edilmesini emretmiştir. Yapının kesin tarihi bilinmese de, genellikle 4. veya 5. yüzyıla tarihlendirilir ve erken Hristiyanlık dönemine ait olduğu düşünülür.

Bu kutsal alan, Karpos ve Papylos’un anısını yaşatmak için bir ibadet yeri olarak hizmet etmiştir. Daha sonraki yüzyıllarda, bu temelin üzerine St. Polykarpos’a adanmış kubbeli bir kilise inşa edilmiştir; ancak bu kilise, 1782 yılında çıkan bir yangında yok olmuştur. 1833 yılında inşa edilen Hagios Menas Kilisesi, bu tarihî kalıntıların üzerine oturtulmuş ve martyrionu koruma altına almıştır.

Martyrionun alt yapısı nispeten iyi korunmuştur ve erken Bizans dönemi mimari uygulamalarına dair nadir bir örnek sunar. Yapı, bir apse ve tuğladan yapılmış bir kubbe tonozu içerir. Ayrıca, kısmen bir beşik tonozlu geçit ile çevrilmiştir ve bu da yapının mimari cazibesini artırmaktadır. Yüzyıllar boyunca değişime uğrasa da, martyrion, Konstantinopolis’in dini ve kültürel geleneklerine olan bağlılığını hissettiren somut bir bağlantı sunar.

Günümüzde bu alt yapı, modern bir işlev kazanarak Helena Çak Stones adlı bir restoran olarak kullanılmaktadır. Ayrıca, siteye yanındaki bir oto yıkama alanından başka bir giriş sağlanmaktadır. Bu özellikleriyle, hem tarih meraklıları hem de sıradışı mekân arayışında olan ziyaretçiler için ilginç bir durak haline gelmiştir.
