For travelers who love to explore unique, off-the-beaten-path destinations, Müze Gazhane in Hasanpaşa, Kadıköy is a must-visit. Once an industrial gasworks, this site has been beautifully restored and transformed into a vibrant cultural center. Combining history, sustainability, science, and art, Müze Gazhane is a perfect example of how cities can repurpose their industrial heritage into engaging public spaces.
Originally built in 1892 as Hasanpaşa Gasworks, this facility played a crucial role in providing gas for lighting and heating on Istanbul’s Anatolian side during the late Ottoman period. Coal transported via the Kurbağalıdere stream was processed here to produce gas, which illuminated Kadıköy and Üsküdar.
After over a century of operation, the gasworks closed in 1993. For years, the site was left abandoned and faced potential demolition. However, thanks to the efforts of local activists and cultural organizations, the historical complex was saved and underwent a major restoration. In 2021, it reopened as Müze Gazhane, a modern cultural space that preserves the past while embracing the future.
Müze Gazhane spans 32,000 square meters and offers a variety of attractions for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re interested in history, science, art, or just looking for a cool place to hang out, there’s something for everyone.
One of the most unique aspects of Müze Gazhane is its Climate Museum, the first of its kind in Turkey. This interactive museum educates visitors about climate change, sustainability, and environmental issues through engaging exhibits. A must-visit for anyone passionate about our planet’s future!

Named after architect and historian Afife Batur, this library houses a collection of over 10,000 books covering diverse topics. It’s a peaceful spot for book lovers who want to take a break and read in a quiet environment.
Beyond its exhibitions and galleries, Müze Gazhane is a social hub where people come to relax, work, and connect. The space includes:
